SPOTLIGHT: ANDY WARHOL

Henzel Studio is honored to collaborate with The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts on a groundbreaking collection of handmade art rugs and accompanying pillows that brings to light one of Warhol’s most obscure works, while paying homage to his most iconic and popular subject; Marilyn Monroe. Designed by Calle Henzel and curated by Joakim Andreasson, the collection marks the second installment of Henzel Studio Heritage, developed with foundations and estates of the most prominent artists of the 20th century. For ‘Henzel Studio Heritage: Andy Warhol’, Andreasson identified and applied as basis for the collection a maquette Warhol created for an unrealized artists book. The handmade model consists of thirty-eight octagonal pages, each a die-cut detail from Warhol’s print edition set of Marilyn Monroe dated 1967 that includes ten variations of the iconic star. To expand on the maquette, the original Monroe portraits have been further deconstructed and appropriated by Calle Henzel. Henzel applied his signature design characteristic; freeform organic shapes, strategically placed holes, uneven punk-like fringes and elaborate surface treatments. The collection was launched at Webster in conjunction with Art Basel Miami Beach.

HENZEL STUDIO SIGNATURE & COLLABORATIONS / NEW + FEATURED CARPETS

HENZEL STUDIO is a Swedish luxury rug manufacturer established in 1999. Henzel Studio’s ethos is based on the artistic practice of Calle Henzel, founder and creative director. Over the past twenty years, he has translated his artistic practice as painter and collage artist into the medium at hand, positioning Henzel Studio as one of the most progressive luxury rug brands in the world. To expand on this practice, HENZEL STUDIO COLLABORATIONS, curated by Joakim Andreasson, was conceived as a continuous initiative inviting some of the most prominent contemporary artists of our time to freely and seamlessly translate their work through an alternate media and the extraordinary practices that are involved in the making of Henzel Studio’s rugs. All Henzel Studio rugs are custom and made by hand, using centuries’ old weaving techniques that make each rug one of a kind.  Our signature designs can be made according to individual wishes; color, size, knot count, shape and materials. Each individual order is carefully studied to create a unique rug that combines a client’s specifications and the distinctive aesthetic of Henzel Studio.

EXPANDED COLLABORATION: JACK PIERSON X HENZEL STUDIO / ON VIEW AT GAVLAK GALLERY, PALM BEACH

To expand on our ongoing collaboration with Pierson, two additional designs launched in late 2018. Here, Pierson re-appropriated pieces from his abstract sculpture series. The first one, based on ABSTRACT #12 (2008) is a freeform design with a surface treatment that replicates a worn vintage feel though variable material compositions of wool and silk. For the second design, Pierson re-appropriated a component of his sculpture GOIN HOME (2011). The connected shapes creates free-form carpet with variable pile heights for dimension and enhanced use of silk to increase contrast.

COLLABORATION WITH LOS ANGELES-BASED ARTIST JWAN YOSEF

HENZEL STUDIO is proud to announce a collaboration with Los Angeles-based artist JWAN YOSEF in the creation of a limited edition carpet based on his work with masking tape.

In a way, I don’t really consider this carpet as two-dimensional. I worked with masking tape as a reference and the carpet became a pretty accurate three-dimensional imitation of that real object. The elevations of the crossing pieces of “tape” are pretty real in proportions. I wanted to superimpose the idea of an adhesive object. To somehow tie in a room and its contents together through the image of a strip of masking tape. This all made it an obvious and fun object to work with. - JWAN YOSEF
