REINVENTING RUG MAKING

Calle Henzel

Calle Henzel, founder and creative director of Henzel Studio, has over the past twenty years translated his artistic practice as painter and collage artist into the medium at hand, positioning Henzel Studio as one of the most progressive luxury rug brands in the world. The organic and artistic process of Calle Henzel has been the driving force in the development of Henzel Studio’s designs. He has over the years in an uncompromised fashion challenged the traditional conventions of subject matter, shape, finishings and special treatments as a result of painstaking research that includes vintage treatments, intricate surface compositions and even natural erosion – methodologies that further blur the distinction between art and design. Calle Henzel has collaborated with some of the most prominent names and foundations in contemporary art including; Richard Prince, Nan Goldin, Mickalene Thomas, Lawrence Weiner, Douglas Gordon, Anselm Reyle, Juergen Teller, Tom of Finland Foundation and The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, among others. His collaborations and own designs has been exhibited at prominent venues such as MOCA, Katonah Museum of Art, Boca Raton Museum of Art, Rossana Orlandi Gallery and The Goss-Michael Foundation.

FEATURING OVER 30 WORLD-RENOWNED ARTISTS

Henzel Studio Collaborations

Since the launch of 'Henzel Studio Collaborations' at Barneys New York Madison Avenue in 2014 during Frieze Art Fair, Henzel Studio has developed limited edition art rugs with over thirty leading contemporary artists including Ashley Bickerton, Sanford Biggers, Olaf Breuning, Scott Campbell, Leo Gabin, Nan Goldin, Douglas Gordon, Kim Gordon, Carsten Höller, Jonathan Horowitz, Robert Knoke, Helmut Lang, Linder, Bjarne Melgaard, Marilyn Minter, Tim Noble & Sue Webster, Tony Oursler, Richard Phillips, Jack Pierson, Richard Prince, Anselm Reyle, Wilhelm Sasnal, Juergen Teller, Mickalene Thomas and Lawrence Weiner among others. Via 'Henzel Studio Heritage' extensive collections have also been developed in collaboration with artists' estates, that to date include Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and Tom of Finland Foundation.

HENZEL STUDIO COLLABORATIONS

An unprecedented program

Free to disregard design movements and related principles and rules, the featured artists were invited to freely and seamlessly translate their work and artistic ethos into the media at hand, exploring shape, volume, and finishing, where practicality was secondary to concept. This creative brief allows all artists to embrace the outcome as part of their body of work.

“Art rugs have been around for quite some time in various forms, and some of the most prominent artists including Francis Bacon, Louise Bourgeois, Alexander Calder, Robert Indiana, Mike Kelley, Ellsworth Kelly, Fernand Leger, Roy Lichtenstein, Henri Matisse, Joan Miro, and Pablo Picasso have all turned to the media at some point in their oeuvre. However, rather than look back, we’re looking to encapsulate facets of contemporary art and work with a curated group of artists that simultaneously express their ethos within a broad yet defined scope. Having more than thirty leading contemporary artists collaborate in this capacity makes Henzel Studio Collaborations an unprecedented program, even though the artisan practices remind us that the possibility has always been there.”

HENZEL STUDIO HERITAGE

Andy Warhol

Henzel Studio is honored to collaborate with The Andy Warhol Foundation of Visual Arts on a groundbreaking collection of handmade art rugs and accompanying pillows that brings to light one of Warhol’s most obscure works, while paying homage to his most iconic and popular subject; Marilyn Monroe. Designed by Calle Henzel and curated by Joakim Andreasson.

COLLABORATIONS

The Non-Violence Project Foundation (NVP)

HENZEL STUDIO is pleased to partner with the Non-Violence Project on a limited collection of fine art rugs after Swedish artist Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd’s iconic sculpture The Knotted Gun. Regarded as the most recognized artistic statements promoting non-violence, the sculpture was created after the artist’s grief of his friend the musician and The Beatles member John Lennon’s tragic death in 1980. Designed by Calle Henzel, the collection of hand knotted rugs presents scanned adaptations of the sculpture in five different colors. Each rug is free-from, made of 100% silk and designed with variable pile-heights assigned to create a layered adaptation of the sculpture. The bronze sculpture is casted after an oversized Colt Python .357 Magnum revolver with its muzzle tied in a knot. The original version of the sculpture was installed at the John Lennon memorial grounds of Strawberry Fields in New York’s Central Park, across from the Dakota, the building where the musician and his wife Yoko Ono lived together. In 1988, Luxembourg donated the original sculpture to the United Nations, and it was moved and installed outside of the headquarters of the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Since 1993, the sculpture has been the symbol of The Non Violence Project (NVP), a nonprofit organization that promotes social change through violence-prevention education programs.

IN CONJUNCTION WITH FRIEZE LOS ANGELES

Erode - Morph - Bloom

Erode - Morph - Bloom, an exhibition in conjunction with Frieze LA, featured works by six contemporary artists; Vanessa Beecroft, Nan Goldin, Kim Gordon, Katerina Jebb, Mary McCartney and Marilyn Minter. The exhibition highlighted six hand-knotted rugs designed by each artist as part of Henzel Studio’s artist program. Alongside the exclusive textiles, and positioned in close proximity, are original artworks selected together with each artist to establish a cross-media relationship and narrative, determined by their output within the gallery’s domicile layout and the spatial engagement with surrounding furniture designs and architectural elements. The artists’ rugs collectively evoke a cyclical course that is directly tied with their artisanal makings — here the erosion of raw materials, the morphing from one media to another, and its blossoming into the end result — play a role in terms of production, subject matter, and design attributes.

Henzel Studio exhibition at The West Hollywood Edition

The exhibition at The West Hollywood Edition celebrated ten years of Henzel Studio’s groundbreaking program of artist designed carpets. Since its inception in 2012, Henzel Studio's founder and creative director Calle Henzel and curator Joakim Andreasson have directly collaborated with more than thirty artists to translate their respective practices onto this traditional medium. The program has been exhibited worldwide at renowned institutional and commercial venues.

The fifteen exhibited artists are all groundbreaking and leading forces within their respective fields and media, ranging from sculpture, drawing, collage, photography, installations, reliefs and video art. Their mark has not only been honored and highlighted at leading galleries and institutions worldwide, but also widely documented and manifested as a mirror of cultural movements. Unveiled for the first time were carpets by contemporary artist duos Sue Webster & Tim Noble and Jake & Dinos Chapman, as well as the estates of Richard Bernstein and Carl Fredrik Reuterswärd.

An opening reception honoring the exhibition was hosted by Jwan Yosef.
